Hong Kong probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think of a golf destination.

For us, that was part of the appeal.

We kicked off the Asia segment of our worldwide golf journey with a one-way flight from Germany to Hong Kong. We’d been to this buzzing city a few times before and always loved it, but we had never played golf here.

And playing golf in Hong Kong turned out to be quite an experience.

With golf clubs in tow, we navigated crowded streets, MTR stations, and buses before making our way to some surprisingly beautiful courses tucked into the hills and coastline of Hong Kong Island.

Along the way, we discovered that golf in Hong Kong is about much more than simply finding a tee time. It’s about figuring out access, getting around with your clubs, and discovering what it’s like to play golf in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Planning to play golf in Hong Kong? From choosing when to play and understanding the cost of a round to figuring out access and getting around with golf clubs, here are some of the practical things we learned while playing golf in Hong Kong.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Play Golf in Hong Kong?

 If you’re planning to play golf in Hong Kong, October through December is generally the sweet spot. The weather is cooler, and the humidity is lower, making it much more comfortable to be out on the golf course. That said, don’t always expect blue skies — we’ve been to Hong Kong several times and seem to encounter plenty of gray, hazy days!

March through May can also be a good time to play, although humidity starts to creep up. Summer is a different story: it’s hot, wet, and humid, and typhoons can occasionally put a serious damper on golf plans.

How Much Does Golf Cost in Hong Kong?

Golf in Hong Kong isn’t cheap, but that doesn’t mean you need to be a member of a private club to play. Some courses offer visitor access, although availability, green fees and requirements can vary considerably from one course to another.

When we played golf in Hong Kong, we found green fees ranging from around HK$800 to considerably more for private clubs. Caddies, club hire and other extras may also add to the cost, depending on the course.

How Easy Is It to Play Golf in Hong Kong?

Playing golf in Hong Kong takes a little more planning than simply finding a course and booking a tee time. Many of the city’s golf clubs are private, and visitor access can be limited or subject to specific requirements.

That said, it is possible to play as a visitor. We managed to play at both of the courses featured in our Hong Kong Golf Guides, although each required a little research and planning beforehand.

Our biggest tip? Don’t leave it until you arrive in Hong Kong to figure out where you can play. Check the visitor requirements, contact the club in advance, and make sure you understand what’s included before you head out to the course.

How Do You Get Around Hong Kong With Golf Clubs?

Getting around Hong Kong with golf clubs can be an adventure in itself! We’ve dragged our clubs through MTR stations, onto buses, along crowded streets, and even onto the iconic Ding Dings!

While it’s certainly possible, we think a taxi would be the better option for most traveling golfers heading to the course.

Where to Stay in Hong Kong

Where you stay can make a big difference when you’re playing golf in Hong Kong. We’d focus on Hong Kong Island or Tsim Sha Tsui, depending on whether your priority is easy access to the golf courses or being close to Hong Kong’s most famous sights.

• Wan Chai & Causeway Bay: Our pick for golf logistics. These neighboring districts put you on Hong Kong Island, making them a convenient base for reaching courses like Shek O and Deep Water Bay. They’re also lively areas with plenty of local food, markets, shops, and places to explore.
• Central & Admiralty: A great choice for a more upscale stay. These areas put you in the heart of Hong Kong Island, close to major transport connections, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. You’ll also have plenty of hotel options to choose from.
• Tsim Sha Tsui: Ideal for first-time visitors. Located on the Kowloon side, Tsim Sha Tsui puts you right in the middle of some of Hong Kong’s most famous sights, including Victoria Harbour. It’s a little less convenient for the golf courses on Hong Kong Island, but a great base if sightseeing is just as important as golf.
