A Golf Journey Through Taiwan: Rain, Rough Starts, and One Unforgettable Round

We’ll be the first to admit—our golf journey in Taiwan didn’t go quite as planned.

We arrived on the island full of excitement, ready to swing our clubs across as many courses as we could. But between persistent rain and still trying to figure out how to balance golf with full-time travel, we didn’t manage to tee it up nearly as much as we hoped.

First, we went to the Qungian Park Driving Range in Taipei, just to get a feel for things. Later, down south in Kaohsiung, we made it all the way to Kaohsiung Golf and Country Club—only to turn around without playing. Long story.

But our one full round at Taipei Golf Club? That one we’ll remember forever. Not because of birdies or bunker saves, but because of everything that went hilariously sideways. Let’s just say it involved a broken ATM, a credit card that wasn’t accepted, barely enough cash for one green fee, and a desperate but kind-hearted request for a ride back to the train station from someone we think was a member.

That round taught us two things:

1. Always carry extra cash in Taiwan.

2. The best golf memories don’t always come from the golf itself.

We may not have played every fairway in Taiwan, but we got a feel for the golf culture—and we’re hooked. We’ll be back, rain or shine, to explore more courses (and carry more Taiwan Dollars next time).

• Weekends: Expect higher rates, from NT$3,000 to NT$8,150 (~€90 to €250).
• Additional Fees: Caddy, cart, and locker fees can add NT$1,500 to NT$2,300 (~€45 to €70).

How Easy Is It to Play Golf in Taiwan?

Very! Most courses welcome visitors, and you don’t need a membership to play. That said, booking in advance is recommended, and some courses may require a local to help book tee times. Caddies are common, and walking is rare—expect to ride in a cart.

• Accessibility: Many courses are within an hour’s drive from major cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung.
• Booking: While some courses allow walk-ins, it’s advisable to book in advance, especially on weekends.
• Language: English proficiency varies; having a translation app can be helpful.
• Payment: Not all courses accept credit cards, as we found out; carrying sufficient cash is recommended.
