Slow Travel Thailand

Thailand is where it all began. It was during a trip to Thailand in 2016, somewhere between slurping noodles in Bangkok and watching the sun set over ancient ruins, that we had a spark of realization: we didn’t want our sabbatical to end. We dreamed of a life of long-term travel, of discovering new places, cultures, and golf courses around the world. That dream became Puttering around the World. And every time we return to Thailand, it’s everything we hoped for—and more.

From buzzing cities to ancient temples, misty mountains to white-sand beaches, Thailand has a rhythm all its own. And it’s a rhythm we happily get lost in.

Bangkok: A Must-Visit City in Thailand

Bangkok is one of those cities that pulls you in from the moment you arrive. With its vibrant energy, tantalizing street food, and endless things to explore, Bangkok is a must-visit destination for any trip to Thailand.

Start your mornings with a bowl of tom yum soup or a plate of Pad Thai from a local vendor. Don’t miss classics like green curry, mango sticky rice, and the always delicious Thai iced tea. Between meals, there’s so much to explore: majestic temples like Wat Arun and Wat Pho, chaotic and colorful floating markets, and iconic street markets like Chatuchak.

Despite the hustle, there’s something incredibly welcoming about Bangkok—it’s a city that knows how to live.

Exploring Thailand’s UNESCO Heritage: Ayutthaya & Sukhothai

Two of Thailand’s most incredible destinations are located north of Bangkok: Ayutthaya Historical Park and Sukhothai Historical Park. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and absolute must-visits.

Ayutthaya, once the thriving capital of the Kingdom of Siam, is filled with crumbling ruins and towering chedis that echo centuries of history. Just a few hours north of Bangkok, it’s a great day trip or overnight visit.

Sukhothai, a bit further north, is equally awe-inspiring. Known as the birthplace of Thai civilization, its peaceful ruins are spread across a beautiful park, perfect to explore by bicycle under the shade of tall trees.

Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand stole our hearts. Chiang Mai is a laid-back mountain town that blends ancient charm with modern creativity. Wandering the Old City, with its narrow alleys and hidden temples, is one of our favorite things to do.

We were lucky to visit during Yi Peng, the annual lantern festival. During this magical celebration, thousands of glowing lanterns float into the sky as a symbol of letting go. It’s one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever experienced.

Just a few hours away is the bohemian mountain town of Pai. It’s charming, but be warned—the road to get there is famously winding!

We also made our way to Chiang Rai, home of the stunning White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and a slower pace of life.

Island Life in Thailand

Thailand’s beaches and islands are legendary. With so many to choose from, there’s truly an island for everyone.

One of our favorites is Koh Samui. We rented a scooter and circled the island, discovering beaches, waterfalls, and temples along the way. If you are planning holidays on Koh Samui, read our blog Koh Samui Holiday: Our Island Escape for tips and information around the island.

We also wrote a guide to our favorite vegetarian restaurants on Koh Samui—stay tuned for that post!

Another gem is Koh Yao Noi, a peaceful island located between Phuket and Krabi. With quiet beaches, stunning views of Phang Nga Bay, and a laid-back vibe, it’s a perfect spot to relax and slow down.
