Top Highlights in Auckland
Our days in Auckland, New Zealand were unfortunately quite rainy, so we did less than usual when we are in a city. However, Auckland is relatively small, so it is possible to see and do a lot in a short time.
Here’s the list of our Top Highlights in Auckland.
1. Take a ferry to Devonport
From the port (bus stop Britomart) you can get to Devonport by ferry in a quick forty minutes. The ticket costs $7.50 each way.
Tip: The ferry to Devonport is only $4.90 with the AT HOP Card.
In Devonport, you can see beautiful Victorian-style houses. Mount Victoria is absolutely worth the ascent! The view from the top is so awesome and you can see the fantastic skyline of Auckland.

What you also shouldn’t miss is a walk at Cheltenham Beach. From here you can walk to the North Head and see the old bunkers, which are leftovers from the Second World War.

2. Mount Eden
That was THE vantage point for us. Unfortunately, we were unlucky with the weather, because it rained heavily. But the 360° view is simply unsurpassed. The crater, which is overgrown with grass, is sacred, so please refrain from walking down into the crater.

We would also have liked to have returned here during the evening when the city is illuminated. If you have better weather than us, definitely go and see the city view at night.

3. One Tree Hill
Another ascent point with views as far as the eye can see is One Tree Hill. It is a nice walk that not only rewards you with a fantastic view of the city but also with sheep that graze on the hill.

4. Linger in Cafes
There are such sweet cafes in Auckland! On our first day, we went to a small coffee shop named Scarecrow. It is a shop in a shop cafe, in other words. Because, not only is there a nice selection of baked goods, breakfast, and coffee, but also candles, soaps, dish towels, and all sorts of other nice gift items to buy!

5. Discover the city by foot
Start at Kevin’s Arcade, and admire the replica of Michelangelo’s “Moses” in the adjacent park. Continue your walk along K-Street and meander through the countless second-hand shops you will find here. If you continue, you will arrive at Aotea Square. Visit the Auckland Art Museum and have a picnic in Albert Park afterward. Across the street from the park, you will see the tower clock at the university. Walk to the Sky Tower, and from there down to the harbor, and end your journey of discovery with a delicious cocktail at the harbor!
