To make the planning of your trip to Australia easier, we’d like to share with you some of our favorite campgrounds in Queensland. While traveling Australia in our campervan, we stayed in many, many campgrounds. Some of them were “ok”, and some you should definitely skip, but there were some that we really liked. They made it onto our list because they were either very clean, in a prime location, peaceful, different (in a good way), or more than one of the above.

Recommended Apps
In order to find our favorite campgrounds, we used the app CamperMate for the best campsites in Australia. Later on in our trip, we bought the app WikiCamps, which we wish we would have used earlier. Both apps are great. In our opinion, CamperMate is very easy to use with a good and useful selection of categories. But WikiCamps often offers campsites that CamperMate doesn’t have.
At just under 3 euros, WikiCamps is an investment that quickly pays off. And, WikiCamps also includes New Zealand, so if you plan to travel to both New Zealand AND Australia, you only have to pay once.
CamperMate is free of charge.
The Campgrounds listed below are not in any specific order.
Alkoomi Adventure Farm Stay
Located 35 km south of Rockhampton and only 2.5 km off the Bruce Highway, we found the Alkoomi Adventure Farm Stay and thought that we should give it a try. We had stayed too many times now directly at the Highway and were desperate for a tranquil place and a good night’s sleep. And found exactly that at Alkoomi Adventure Farm. What an incredible place!!

The friendly Aussie Family offers a great and wide-open place with all amenities a traveler needs. Check out the activities like horse riding or feeding farm animals, Bushwalks, Woodfired BBQs, Motorbike Riding, Kayaking, fishing & swimming in the lake, and the Chuck Wagon Wine & Cheese Sunset Tours!
If you are out of fresh seasonal fruit or eggs, you can buy them on the farm and it tastes so delicious! We had mango, peeled and cut from the owners and enjoyed it later at a lookout with ocean views.
We can highly recommend the Alkoomi Adventure Farm and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Brandybottle Camping & Recreation Reserve
When you are traveling the world with your golf clubs, then you will definitely find the right campground in Brandybottle. We couldn’t believe our eyes as we read that this campground offers not only powered and unpowered sites but also includes a green fee per stay! A campground with a golf course!! Our late arrival didn’t matter, as we were greeted very friendly and shown our camping spot. The night sky was clear, and we could see millions of stars at night. The next morning, we realized how beautiful this little gem really is. Although it had nonexisting greens, the golf course was fun to play. And the amenities were very clean and spacious.
Unfortunately, there is no sink to wash your dishes, but Jacky, the owner let us wash our dishes in the sink of the bar.
And even if you are not interested in golf, this campground is very well maintained and has only a few sites, so it doesn’t get too crowded.
Definitely a great hidden gem!

Bongaree Caravan Park
We especially liked the big camp kitchen with sitting areas inside as well as outside. The caravan park is across the beach and you have spectacular sunset views. You can even see the Glasshouse Mountains!! The amenities were clean and the location was perfect for exploring Bribie Island. It is more on the pricy side, but unfortunately, all caravan parks on Bribie Island are expensive.

Hervey Bay Information Center
This might be not the typical campground but offers a few designated sites for self-contained campers only. Hervey Bay doesn’t offer any free campgrounds than this one and with only about 5 sites, it might be hard to get a spot. Arriving early is recommended. However, since COVID-19 the toilets have been closed, but there is a dump station.
The permitted length of stay: 2 nights max.
